Extend the Life of Your Cooling System with a Radiator Flush

Today is the final post in the cooling system series. We’ll explain the benefits of a fluid flush, and why a fluid flush is included in full-system service.
What is a cooling system flush?
A cooling system flush, otherwise known as a coolant flush or radiator flush, involves the complete removal of fluid from the system. During normal cooling system service, coolant is drained and then replaced. However, this process only removes about 50% of the fluid from the radiator. It also does nothing to clear out the built-up scale deposits and debris.
During a full flush, a BG flush machine is used to completely clear the system of fluid. Our technicians refer to this as a cooling system “transfusion.” Along with the coolant, any accumulated waste is flushed out of the system.
Our professionals then go in and use BG flushing chemicals to scrub the system clean. Next, BG additives and conditioner are used to prolong the life of the system and protect against future corrosion. Finally, the system is refilled with fresh, premium coolant.
What are the benefits to a coolant flush?
The biggest benefit is removing old coolant before it has a chance to become acidic. Similar to a vehicle’s oil, coolant breaks down over time. Antifreeze specifically can become acidic if it is not periodically replaced. If not properly serviced, old and broken down coolant can cause other parts of the vehicle to beak down, wear prematurely or corrode.
A coolant flush also extends the life of your cooling system. The additives and protective lubricants in coolant are designed to protect the water pump and radiator. As these properties age, they’re less able to do their job. By flushing the system, you’re ensuring clean, functional additives are flowing through the engine.
When do you need a cooling system flush?
As we’ve mentioned previously, your cooling system should receive full maintenance every 30,000-60,000 miles. While servicing your vehicle, our ASE-certified technicians provide a complete cooling system test. Should this test indicate a coolant failure or problem with the system, we’ll recommend a complete BG system flush.
Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines in your owner’s manual. However, if your vehicle’s cooling system undergoes a major repair, such as the replacement of a water pump, a coolant flush is recommended to prevent future failure and extend the life of the new parts installed.
